Fall 2007

STAT451: Introduction to probability Theory

Text Book: Introduction to Mathematical Statistics(6th Edition) by Hogg, McKean, Craig

Course Coverage: Chapters 1-3 and Chapter 4 if time permits

Pre-requisite: Math 251          Class Meets: MW 4:00pm- 5:15pm in ITE229

Course Website: www.math.umbc.edu/~wangxiao/fall07/451/stat451.html

Instructor: Xiao Wang             Email: wangxiao@umbc.edu

Phone: 410-455-2433                Office: 403 Math/Psychology

Office Hours: MW 12:30 - 2:00pm, or by appointment

Grader: TBA

Grading:  Homework 25%     Midterm1 25%     Midterm2 25%     Final 25%; The instructor will convert the term scores to the letter grades by using the following mapping: [85, 100]=A, [70, 85)=B, [60, 70)=C, [50, 60)=D
.

Homework: Weekly homework will be due Wednesday of the following week in class. Duplicative homework will result in 0 for all parties involved. Late homework will NOT be accepted.

Exams: There are two midterms and one final. The exams are not comprehensive. However, due to natural sequence of concepts developed in the course, later exams will require you to understand and retain materials covered in the previous exams.  Exams are in-class closed book.

Course Goals: By the end of this course, students will be able to understand probability measure, random variables and their distribution functions, master many of the distribution finding techniques, such as transformation and moment generating methods, and know a lot of special distributions such as normal, t-, F-distributions.

Academic Integrity: By enrolling in this course, each student assumes the responsibilities of an active participant in UMBC's scholarly community in which everyone's academic work and behavior are held to the highest standards of honesty. Cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, and helping others to commit these acts are all forms of academic dishonesty, and they are wrong. Academic misconduct could result in disciplinary action that may include, but is not limited to, suspension or dismissal.
