Project 2, MATH 481, Spring 2008
Detecting art forgeries

Assignment: 2008–02–25

Read proj2-outline.pdf. It contains instructions in an outline format for your next case study. The file proj2-outline.tex is the LATEX source file corresponding to that PDF file. You may use it as a template to get yourself started.

Note: To download the latex source file, probably you need to right click on the link above and select something like "Save link as...". This is browser-dependent. Let me know if you have difficulty with downloading.

As you read my outline, please note that a statement such as "Explain such and such" is an instruction to you. Don't write "Explain such and such" in your writeup. Write the explanation instead.

The differential equations in this study are pretty simple and can be solved by hand. You won't need Maple to solve them but it would be a good idea if you try out some of the computations on Maple for practice. That will make life easier in the future cases studies where the use of Maple will be necessary.

Project 2 is due on 2008–02–29 Wednesday 2008–03–05. Send me your tex and eps files.

Information on the WEB

A Google search for "van meegeren, vermeer" turns up quite a few links related to Han van Meegeren and his Vermeer forgeries.

An item of interest is that the painting Young Woman Seated at the Virginals, which was declared a Han van Meegeren forgery during his trial, now is believed to be authentic and was sold for $42 million in 2004. See:

By popular demand, here is the Maple worksheet for this project. Probably this is the last Maple worksheet that I hand out in this course; you should be able to manage on your own from now on.
