How to Use www.turnitin.com
This page can be reached via my homepage at
http://www.math.umbc.edu/~gobbert.
Intended Audience
The following information is written for students,
not for instructors! That is, I am making the following assumption:
-
You are a student in a class, and your instructor has asked you
to submit a report to www.turnitin.com.
-
The instructor has already set up the class at www.turnitin.com,
and he/she has supplied you with the class ID and the
enrollment password for this class. You will need both
of these to "join" the class.
There are two sections following below:
- The first one explains how to set up your account at www.turnitin.com
and how to "join" your class; you will have to do these steps
only once (for each class in each semester).
- The second section explains how to submit your report to
www.turnitin.com; you would do this repeatedly during the
semester, namely once for each report that you turn in.
How to Set up Your Account and Join a Class
- Point your webbrowser to
www.turnitin.com.
- Click on "user login" in the center near the top of the page.
- Select "New to Turnitin.com? Click here to get started."
at the top of the login page; do not use the regular login below.
- The system will identify you in the future by the e-mail address
you supply here! Information will be sent to this address, so make
sure to pick a valid address and type it in correctly.
Choose a password; note the rules for passwords given on the page.
Make sure to remember for future use what e-mail address and
password you chose here.
- Fill out the information requested.
- On the next page, verify that you entered all information correctly.
- You are done with the creation of your account at this point.
To make it usable, however, you still need to "join" your class.
The easiest way is to select "login" to go to the login page now.
Select the user type "student",
and use your e-mail address and password (selected earlier) to log in.
- Click on "join new class" near the left edge of the screen.
- Now you need the class ID and enrollment password
that your instructor should have supplied to you.
The enrollment password is case-sensitive!
Note: For FYS 101A in Spring 2003,
these are 54447 and enter101a, respectively.
- Now as well as when you log in in the future, you will see
the class listed. When you click on it, you get to your class portfolio.
See the next section below for further instructions.
How to Submit a Report
This section assumes that you have created your account at www.turnitin.com
and "joined" a class, as described above.
- Point your webbrowser to
www.turnitin.com.
- Click on "user login" in the center near the top of the page.
- Select the user type "student",
and use your e-mail address and password (selected earlier) to log in.
- You should see a list that contains the class you joined earlier.
Click on the class to get to your class portfolio.
- Select "assignments" to see a list of assignments.
- Select "turn it in!" (next to "assignments") to submit a report.
- Fill out a paper title and select an assignment from the pull-down menu.
Then upload your report in one of the formats available;
upload it using the "Browse" button.
You must click the submit button at the bottom of the page.
- When everything works out, you should get a confirmation page
with a digital receipt ID. You may want to hang on to that number.
Notice that at all times, help is available under the "help!"
at the top of the page.
