The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers major programs leading to both the B.A. and B.S. in Mathematics and a B.S. program in Statistics.


Within B.A./B.S. programs in Mathematics the following Areas of Concentration are available:

Concentration in Graduate Study
Concentration in Applied Mathematics
Concentration in Optimization and Operations Research
Concentration in Actuarial Science
Concentration in Statistical Sciences
Concentration in Mathematical Education


Within the B.S. program in Statistics, the Department offers the following two tracks:

Mathematical Statistics Track
Applied Statistics Track


Students in other departments may pursue a minor or a second major in Mathematics or Statistics.
Questions on Mathematics and Statistics Foundations Courses Questions about 100 or 200 level Mathematics and Statistics Courses (pre-requisites, problems signing up for a course, etc.) should be directed to the instructor of the course. The evaluation of transfer credits is coordinated by the Registrar's Office and you would need to submit the Transfer Credit Form there. The following list has some useful links.
Process to Declare/Change to Mathematics/Statistics Major/Minor For general questions on the Mathematics or Statistics programs, contact one of the points of contact below. Students interested in declaring a Mathematics or Statistics major or minor should fill out the Chan ge of Major Form from the Registrar's Office and submit it to the Departmental Coordinator Ms. Janet Burgee in MP 404. Ms. Burgee will then forward your completed Change of Major Form to the Registrars Office and assign you a Mathematics/Statistics Advisor. Process to Declare/Change to Mathematics/Statistics Major Undergraduates are encouraged to become involved in the Council of Majors and the UMBC Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the Honorary National Mathematics Society.
Advising for Majors/Minors and General Questions For general questions on the Mathematics or Statistics programs, contact one of the points of contact below. Current Mathematics or Statistics majors and minors can locate the name of their academic advisor on the bulletin board across from the Math/Statistics Office in MP 410 or in myUMBC in the Advising and Student Support topic under My Advisors. All students who have been assigned an advisor should make appointments directly with that faculty member. Students who wish to switch advisors should contact Ms. Janet Burgee at the below email address. The following links and forms are a resource during advising meetings.
