Professor Potra got a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Bucharest and was an Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh. Between 1984-1997, Professor Potra was on the faculty of the university of Iowa, first as an Associate Professor of Mathematics and later as a Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science. After serving as a program director at the National Science Foundation, he moved to the University of Maryland Baltimore County where he has been a Professor of Mathematics and Affiliate Professor of Computer Science since 1998. Professor Potra specializes in numerical optimization, although he is also active in other areas of computational science. His list of publications includes over one hundred papers published in professional journals. He is the regional editor for the Americas of Optimization Methods and Software, and an associate editor of Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, Numerical Functional Analysis and Optimization, and Optimization and Engineering.
