Professional:
Dr. Neerchal obtained his B.S. and M.S. in Statistics from the Indian
Statistical
Institute in 1982 and 1983
respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. in Statistics from the Iowa State
University,
Ames, Iowa in 1986, under
the guidance of Distingushed Professor Wayne A. Fuller. His reseach interests
revolves around
modelling and analysis of correlated observations. More specifically, he works
with time series data,
overdispersion models and change-point detection. He has been involved with
environmental data analysis and several
biological applications of statistics. Dr. Neerchal has worked with the
Chesapeake Bay monitoring data and a number
of Data Quality Objectives processes related to superfund site clean up. Dr.
Neerchal is a co-author of
"Environmental Statistics with S-PLUS", a well received publication of Chapman
Hall/CRC press.
Dr. Neerchal received the Distigushed Achievement Award and Medal from the
American Statisical Associon's Section on Statistics and the Environment in
2000.
Dr. Neerchal has held several administrative responsibilities: Interim Chair
and
Graduate Program Director in the
department, Vice president of the Maryland Chapter of American Statisical
Association (ASA), Continuing Eductaions
Coordinator for the ASA's Section on Statistics and the Environment and Chair
of the Committee on Energy Statistics of ASA. He is currently the Chair of
the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, UMBC.
Personal:
Dr. Neerchal lives in Ellicott City, MD, with his family (wife, two kids and
his mom). He is an active participant
in the Sunday School program of Chinmaya Mission (www.chinmayadc.org) and a
fully participating enthusiast of an Indian folk art called Yakshagana
