Muddappa Gowda received his Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1982. He wrote his Ph.D. thesis in Several Complex Variables under the supervision of Professor Walter Rudin. Coming under the influence of Professors Olvi Mangasarian and S.M. Robinson at Wisconsin, he started working in the area of complementarity problems and variational inequalities, which has numerous applications in optimization, economics, game theory, engineering, etc. His current research includes, complementarity problems over symmetric cones in Euclidean Jordan algebras, complementarity (dynamical) systems, and stability of switching systems. Since fall 2005, he has been the Director of Graduate Programs in Mathematics and Statistics at UMBC.
